In-Home Newborn Photography vs. Studio Newborn Photography: Which Is Best for Your Family?

One of the first questions many expectant parents ask is:
"Should we do our newborn session at home or in a studio?"
The answer depends less on the photographs themselves and more on the experience you want.
At Chelsea Hickey Photography, I offer both in-home newborn sessions and studio newborn sessions because every family has different needs. While both options focus on natural, authentic images and genuine connection, the experience of each session is quite different.

Benefits of an In-Home Newborn Photography Session
My in-home newborn sessions are designed to feel effortless from the moment you book.
Instead of asking you to pack up a brand-new baby and travel to a studio, I come to you. Before your session, we'll have a planning consultation where we'll discuss your home, your family's style, and what matters most to you. You'll also receive a wardrobe guide and access to styling support so everyone feels prepared.
On the day of your session, a professional hair and makeup artist comes directly to your home, allowing you to relax and enjoy a little pampering while I photograph your baby and family.
These sessions typically take place within the first eight weeks after birth, though my favorite window is often between three and five weeks when families have had a little time to settle into life with their new baby.
Why families love in-home newborn photography sessions
No packing. No rushing. No leaving the house.
If you've ever tried to leave the house with a newborn, you know it's rarely as simple as it sounds.
Your home becomes part of your family's story.
The nursery you carefully designed. The rocking chair where you spend your evenings. The family dog who refuses to leave the baby's side. These details often become some of the most treasured images years later.
Siblings tend to be more relaxed.
Children are naturally more comfortable in familiar surroundings where they can take breaks, play, and return when they're ready.
The session unfolds naturally.
There's plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, and soothing without feeling rushed.

Benefits of a Studio Newborn Photography
For families who love a clean, timeless aesthetic, my studio newborn sessions offer a beautiful alternative.
These sessions take place at my private studio in Canton, which was designed specifically for natural, family-focused newborn photography.
Unlike traditional newborn studios filled with props, buckets, and elaborate posing setups, my studio sessions focus on connection, emotion, and the relationships between family members.
The space features soft neutral tones, beautiful natural light, comfortable seating areas, and simple backdrops that keep the focus exactly where it belongs: on your family.
Why families choose the studio for their photography session
Everything is ready when you arrive.
You don't need to worry about preparing your home or finding the best light. The studio is designed specifically for photography.
A clean, timeless look.
Many parents love the simplicity of neutral backgrounds and minimal distractions.
The same natural approach.
Whether we're photographing your family at home or in the studio, you'll never be asked to perform awkward poses. My goal is always to create images that feel genuine and connected.
Which Session Creates Better Photographs?
Honestly, neither.
The photographs are beautiful because of the people in them, not the location.
What matters most is choosing the experience that feels easiest and most enjoyable for your family.
If preserving the nursery, your home, and the everyday details of this chapter is important to you, an in-home session is likely the best fit.
If you'd rather arrive at a prepared space and love a clean, minimalist aesthetic, you'll probably love the studio experience.
My Recommendation
For first-time parents, I often find that the decision comes down to one question:
When you look back at these photographs in twenty years, do you want to remember your baby, or do you want to remember your baby in this home, in this nursery, during this chapter of your life?
Neither answer is wrong.
Some families want the home documented because they know how quickly everything changes. Others prefer timeless portraits without the distractions of everyday life.
The good news is that both options are designed to create meaningful images you'll treasure long after the newborn stage is over.
