What Parents Really Want to Know Before Booking Newborn Photos

Booking newborn photos can feel a little overwhelming, especially if this is your first baby. Most families have a lot of questions before reaching out, and honestly, they’re usually the same questions almost everyone asks.

So I thought I’d put together one easy place to answer some of the biggest concerns parents have before booking a newborn session, whether you’re considering an in-home lifestyle session or a studio experience.

“My baby is already a few weeks old… is it too late?”

Not at all. In fact, one of the biggest benefits of natural, lifestyle newborn photography is that your baby doesn’t need to be just a few days old.

Unlike heavily posed newborn photography, where babies need to be very sleepy and flexible for specific poses, my sessions are designed to capture connection, personality, and real moments. Older newborns are often more alert and expressive, which can actually create beautiful opportunities for interaction and engagement.

And honestly? Waiting a couple weeks can sometimes make the entire experience feel less stressful for parents too. You’ve had a little time to settle in before someone shows up at your house with a camera.

I photograph newborns all the way up to 8 weeks old, though I find the sweet spot is usually around 3–5 weeks.

And if your baby is older than that, don’t worry. “New Baby Sessions” are very similar and still capture this season beautifully.

“What if my house is small?”

I promise, your home does not need to look like it belongs in a magazine.

Over the years I’ve photographed families in everything from large homes with huge windows to tiny Boston condos and basement apartments. A beautiful session is much more about connection and light than square footage.

With a little creativity, we can almost always make it work.

“What if my house doesn’t have great natural light?”

No problem at all.

While I love using natural light when it’s available, I also bring professional lighting that mimics soft daylight in a very natural way. So whether your home is bright and airy or a little darker, your photos will still look clean, timeless, and beautifully lit.

“Do I need to buy outfits or wraps for the baby?”

Nope. I bring everything we’ll need.

That includes wraps, blankets, timeless baby outfits, and simple accessories like bonnets or bows if you’d like them. Before your session, we’ll go over colors, styling, and the overall look you want during your style and concept consultation so everything feels cohesive and personal.

You don’t need to stress-shop for tiny outfits three days postpartum. I’ve got you covered.

“I’m awkward in photos…”

Almost everyone says this.

The good news is that lifestyle newborn sessions are designed to feel relaxed and natural, not stiff or overly posed. I’ll guide you the entire time with simple direction so you’re never left wondering what to do with your hands or where to look.

And for documentary-style moments, most families end up so focused on interacting with their baby that they completely forget the camera is even there.

That’s usually when the best moments happen.

“Do you handle the baby?”

Yes, and very safely.

I’ve been photographing newborns for nearly 10 years and have two children of my own. Safety is always my first priority.

That said, because my approach is natural and baby-led, we typically aren’t putting babies into complicated poses. Most of the time, your baby is comfortably wrapped, lying naturally, or in your arms.

I’ll usually help with wrapping and positioning at the beginning for detail photos, and after that, your baby is mostly with you.

Studio vs. In-Home: Which One Is Better?

Honestly, neither is “better.” They’re just different experiences.

In-Home Newborn Sessions

These sessions are perfect if you want your photos to feel deeply personal and connected to this specific season of life. We can incorporate your nursery, your home, and the little everyday moments that make this time unique.

Studio Newborn Sessions

Studio sessions are simpler and more streamlined. The space is already styled with clean, timeless setups so you can just show up and relax without worrying about preparing your home.

They combine lifestyle family connection with more polished studio imagery, while still keeping everything natural and baby-focused.

“What do I need to bring to the studio?”

Very little.

The studio is stocked with wraps, blankets, simple newborn outfits, and accessories. You’re always welcome to bring sentimental items if you’d like to include them, and I’ll guide wardrobe planning for parents and siblings beforehand so everything feels cohesive.

“How long does a newborn session last?”

Most sessions last around 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the flow of the baby.

There’s plenty of time built in for feeding breaks, diaper changes, soothing, and pauses whenever needed. Everything is completely baby-led, and I never schedule newborn sessions back-to-back because I don’t want anyone feeling rushed.

“Can siblings or grandparents be included?”

Absolutely.

Whether your session is in-home or in-studio, immediate family and grandparents are always welcome to join in. These photos often become even more meaningful years down the road.

“What should we expect to invest?”

Every family’s goals are a little different, which is why I keep the experience personalized rather than one-size-fits-all.

Sessions are designed as a full-service experience, from planning and styling all the way through helping you select and design finished artwork for your home.

When you book, your session fee includes a credit toward your image purchase. After your session, we’ll meet for a relaxed ordering appointment where you’ll choose your favorite images and artwork options.

Some families want a small collection of meaningful images. Others want albums or wall art for their home. You only purchase what you truly love, and I guide you through the process so it feels simple and stress-free.
